Touring the Roads of Kashima-Namegata - A Magical World Bathed in the Glow of Dawn

The approximately one-kilometer-long Jingu Bridge marks the boundary between Kitaura and the Wani River. From Kashima City, you cross the Jingu Bridge into Itako City, then immediately turn left and drive along the right bank of the Wani River.

The view here just before sunrise is indescribable. The eastern sky gradually turns an amber color, and that color extends to the clouds. How ethereal the dawn sky is! The presence of some clouds enhances its charm.

For several tens of minutes between the sky turning pale and the imminent sunrise, the colors of this picturesque landscape change by the minute. Of course, the scenery differs depending on the cloud formations of that day. No two "paintings" are the same, and each has its own value.

A grey heron stands by the riverbank, aiming for small fish. Its silhouette is also like a painting. Looking up, two or three intermediate egrets gracefully fly across the river.

When I look at the water's surface, fish, perhaps mullets, are jumping with "boings" and "plops" everywhere. They are the only dynamic presence, accentuating the world of silence.

Running along the embankment from Jingu Bridge to Wani River Bridge is just under 5 kilometers. Heading east along the right bank, you can see the industrial complex of the Kashima Coastal Industrial Zone in the distance.

The structures, which should be the antithesis of nature, blend surprisingly well into the natural surroundings, and the trailing white smoke deepens the flavor of the landscape.

High-voltage transmission towers, originating from the thermal power plant in Kamisu City, stand in parallel rows in the rice paddies of Itako City. Their appearance is also picturesque.

While it may seem like an ordinary landscape, visiting at sunrise reveals many spots where you'll want to stop and imprint the scene in your memory. The dawn light dramatically enhances the chimneys, power towers, rice fields, and house groves.

Speaking of which, on clear winter mornings, Mount Fuji can sometimes be seen from this area. Last winter, I was fortunate enough to witness it.

Recalling such thoughts, as I leisurely run, the dawn light begins to stream through the gaps in the forest on the hill on the Kashima side, across the Wani River. Finally, the brilliant red sun peeks out.

From that point on, it happens quickly. Once the sun has risen to a certain height, the ordinary world reappears, and the glorious time comes to an end. This fantastical show can only be enjoyed for a limited time.

That's why I'll have to run again another day.
