Antlers x SkyPerfecTV! Special Interview: Atsushi Yanagisawa

"I want everyone to enjoy the day with a sense of gratitude."

Atsushi Yanagisawa, who has thrilled supporters with countless goals, will once again stand on the pitch at Kashima Stadium on July 5th. He played for Antlers from 1996 to 2003, and then again until 2007 after a transfer overseas. We interviewed Yanagisawa, who is now a top coach, about his retirement match.

―The retirement match is approaching. What is your most memorable experience during your time at Antlers?

Yanagisawa: Everything was a valuable experience for me, so it's hard to pick one, but I guess it would be my first year or two after joining. I went in with the feeling that I would play right away and make an impact, but I went through a long period where I couldn't get into games. That's when I really felt how difficult it was to compete as a professional. There were many frustrating and tough times, but I worked hard and learned a lot. There were so many wonderful, professional seniors there, many Japanese national team players and Brazilian national team players. The time I spent there was very significant for me.

―What does Kashima Antlers mean to you?

Yanagisawa: I think it's the club that taught me all the fundamentals. The basics of being a professional player. That's not just football, but also how to approach things and my daily life. Everything I experienced at Antlers became my foundation, and it shows in my words and actions, and that was true even when I went to other clubs. The Zico Spirit values are "dedication," "sincerity," and "respect." These are important no matter which club you go to. If that foundation is solid, I think you can adapt to various situations. I'm currently studying a lot as a coach, and I think my words there are also based on those fundamentals.

―What kind of play do you want people to see on the day of the retirement match?

Yanagisawa: First, I'm worried if I can even play (laughs). Since it's the last time for the three of us, I hope we can enjoy playing. There's pressure not to make any strange plays, though. I hope to share the same time and space with the players who have competed seriously over the years, and with the supporters as well.

―Many supporters are probably hoping for a goal.

Yanagisawa: Of course! I definitely want to score a goal and celebrate with everyone in the stadium.

―Finally, please tell us about your aspirations for the 2nd stage.

Yanagisawa: The first stage didn't get off to a good start. There were some injuries, so I believe that if the whole team gets themselves in order and approaches the second stage in perfect condition, we can get good results. I hope we can work as one team and make every day count.
