Toru Araiba, who retired after a 17-year career, will make a grand return to Kashima Stadium on July 5th. He played for Antlers for nine years, from 2004 to 2012, contributing to seven championship victories. We asked Araiba, who is still loved by many Antlers supporters, how he feels about his retirement match.
―Many people express regret about your early retirement. What led to your decision?
Araiba: I don't know what everyone thinks, but I made the decision at this time after considering various things comprehensively. Maybe I can never say "I gave it my all" no matter when I quit, and I'm not the type to give it my all anyway, so I still have some gas left in the tank (laughs). As a result of retiring at this timing, I'm glad I'm getting a retirement match.

―We're looking forward to your retirement match. What kind of play do you want to show the supporters?
Araiba: On the contrary, I'm worried about what kind of play I can even do (laughs). I've been keeping myself in pretty good shape, but I'm not confident I can run for 90 minutes (bitter smile). But the joy of standing on Kashima Stadium's pitch once again is truly immense.
―Of course, you'll be aiming for a goal?
Araiba: Well, there'll be chances, right (laughs)? Should I score the opening goal early and then let Koji and Yanasan have their moment, or should I score at the very end to get everyone excited? I'll try to read the atmosphere and decide that.
―During your active career, what are some memorable matches you played for Antlers?
Araiba: The most memorable one is the opening match of the year I transferred to Antlers. We played against Gamba at Kashima Stadium, and I scored the equalizer in the closing minutes. Gamba was the team that developed me until then, so it was half joy and a strange feeling. Looking back at my soccer career, I think it was definitely a milestone goal.

―What does Antlers mean to you, Araiba-san?
Araiba: Now that I look back, of course, I won titles, but almost all of my soccer life is with Antlers. It might sound a bit cheesy, but for me, it's my "club of heart."
―Finally, please tell us what you expect from Antlers for the 2nd Stage.
Araiba: Antlers is a club that must always win titles. Is there anything else to expect from this club besides winning? No matter how well they play, no matter how much they contend for the championship, anything other than winning is all the same. That's what I learned at this club, and I want everyone to play with that sense of mission.
