Eight teams were divided into Group A and Group B, with four teams in each, and played in a preliminary league.
Sagan Tosu advanced from preliminary Group A, and Kashima Antlers advanced from Group B to the finals.
The final, a rematch from the previous year, was an intense game. In the first half, Tosu scored first by capitalizing on a loose ball from a free kick. Tosu led at halftime. In the second half, Kashima launched a counterattack. They equalized from a corner kick, and dramatically scored with a mid-range shot just before the end of the match, leading to Kashima Antlers' victory.
